TMP agar medium

TMP agar (tylosin-polymyxin B agar) is a selective medium, which is specially used to separate and count Clostridium perfringens in food. Its selectivity depends on the antibiotics tylosin and polymyxin B, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-negative bacteria, gram-positive bacteria and most anaerobic bacteria, while allowing Clostridium perfringens to grow dominant. The basic nutrition of the culture medium supports the reproduction of the strain. The typical colony is black, which is because the strain ferments lactose to produce acid, and the sulfite in the reduction medium reacts with iron ions to produce black iron sulfide precipitate. This culture medium is often used in combination with double-layer agar technique and anaerobic culture, and has good specificity for microbiological examination of suspicious foods
