TCBS agar
TCBS agar is a highly selective identification medium, which is specially used for the separation of Vibrio cholerae and other pathogenic vibrios. Its high alkaline pH(8.6) and components containing bile salts, citrate and thiosulfate can strongly inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and most intestinal bacteria. Different vibrios present different colonies according to their sucrose fermentation ability: Vibrio cholerae ferments sucrose to produce acid, forming large smooth yellow colonies; Vibrio parahaemolyticus does not ferment sucrose and is a blue-green colony. This culture medium has strong selectivity and discrimination, and it is the first choice for Vibrio separation in clinical and seafood inspection.
