Mitochondrial complex II, also known as succinate-coenzyme Q reductase, is widely present in the mitochondria of animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells. It catalyzes the oxidation of succinate to fumarate, and at the same time, the prosthetic group FAD is reduced to FADH2. The latter further reduces oxidized coenzyme Q to generate reduced coenzyme Q, which is a branch of the respiratory electron transport chain.
