Gentamicin agar
Gentamycin agar is a highly selective medium for isolating and culturing Vibrio cholerae (especially Eirto biotype). Its basic components include peptone, potassium sulfite, sodium citrate, etc., which provide necessary nutrition and inhibit some miscellaneous bacteria. The key selective component is the added antibiotic-gentamicin, which can strongly inhibit the growth of most gram-positive bacteria and many gram-negative bacteria, while Vibrio cholerae is insensitive to it, so it can grow preferentially. On this medium, the colony of Vibrio cholerae is grayish brown to black in the center due to the reduction of potassium sulfite. This culture medium is highly selective, and is often used for monitoring and epidemiological investigation of cholera foci. It is one of the effective tools for isolating Vibrio cholerae.
