Sodium chloride nutrient agar
Sodium chloride nutrient agar is a basic and commonly used selective proliferation medium, which is mainly used to screen and cultivate halophilic or halotolerant microorganisms. Its basic components are the same as ordinary nutrient agar, including peptone, beef extract powder and sodium chloride, etc. The key difference is that the concentration of sodium chloride is significantly increased, usually 3% to 10% or even higher, thus creating a high osmotic pressure environment. This environment can effectively inhibit the growth of most non-halophilic bacteria, while specific halophilic bacteria (such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Halobacterium, etc.) can grow well. This culture medium is widely used in aquatic product inspection, marine environmental microorganism research and food hygiene and safety monitoring, and it is an indispensable tool to identify pathogenic Vibrio. A preliminary judgment can be made by observing the colony morphology and growth.
