KIA is a compound biochemical reaction medium for the preliminary identification of Enterobacteriaceae. The inclined plane is rich in lactose, the bottom layer is glucose, and it contains ferrous sulfate and phenol red indicator. Inoculation of bacteria that pierce the bottom and draw lines can produce different reactions according to their ability to ferment sugar: if glucose is fermented to produce acid, the bottom will turn yellow; If lactose is fermented at the same time, the inclined plane will turn yellow. If bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide, it will react with iron ions to blacken the culture medium. Typical, such as Salmonella, is characterized by slant red (lactose is not fermented), bottom yellow (glucose is fermented) and hydrogen sulfide is produced. The culture medium provides key basis for the preliminary identification of intestinal pathogens through sugar fermentation and hydrogen sulfide test.
