T1N1 agar
T1N1 agar is a basic non-selective medium, which is specially used for the resuscitation, culture and species conservation of Vibrio cholerae and other vibrios. Its name comes from its simple basic components: "T1" stands for 1% Tryptone, which provides nitrogen source and growth factor; "N1" stands for 1% sodium chloride (NaCl), which is used to maintain the optimum osmotic pressure for the growth of Vibrio. The culture medium is simple in formula, rich in nutrition, contains no inhibitor and has little toxicity to damaged bacterial cells, so it is especially suitable for recovering Vibrio from environmental samples or processed food samples that may be in sublethal state. In cholera surveillance, the enriched samples are often streaked and inoculated on T1N1 agar to obtain pure culture, which is an important basic step before subsequent serological typing and molecular biological identification.
