Sodium chloride polymyxin B broth base (SCPB)
Sodium chloride polymyxin B broth base (SCPB)
Sodium chloride polymyxin B broth base (SCPB) is a liquid medium for selective enrichment of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Its selectivity is realized by two components: high concentration of sodium chloride (usually 2-3%) creates a hypertonic environment suitable for the growth of Vibrio, while inhibiting non-halophilic bacteria; The antibiotic polymyxin B can further inhibit the residual Gram-negative bacteria. The basic components of the culture medium provide necessary nitrogen and carbon sources to ensure the good proliferation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In inspection, it is often used as a pre-enrichment step, especially suitable for detecting samples (such as processed food) with low bacteria content. The detection rate is improved by enrichment, and then it is transferred to selective plates such as TCBS for separation. It is a common tool in food microbial inspection.
