Alkaline bile salt agar
Alkaline bile salt agar is a strong selective solid medium, which is mainly used for the separation and culture of Vibrio cholerae. Its selectivity is based on two key factors: first, the high pH value (about 8.4) creates an alkaline environment suitable for Vibrio cholerae and unfavorable to other intestinal bacteria; Second, the addition of bile salts can strongly inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative miscellaneous bacteria. On this medium, Vibrio cholerae which can ferment sucrose forms yellow and moist colonies, while most miscellaneous bacteria which do not ferment sucrose have small colonies or no growth. This culture medium is highly selective, and it is one of the most classic and important separation media in cholera pathogen diagnosis and epidemic focus monitoring, and it can directly screen suspicious target bacteria from a large number of miscellaneous bacteria
