Halophilic selective agar
Halophilic selective agar is a special solid medium for isolating and counting halophilic Vibrio, especially for Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Its selectivity is mainly achieved by high concentration of sodium chloride (usually 7-10%), which can completely inhibit the growth of non-halophilic bacteria. The ingredients in the culture medium provide basic nutrition and often contain an indicator system for observation. The typical formula is based on my wife's blood agar, and red blood cells are added to detect the unique Kanagawa phenomenon (β hemolysis) of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The culture medium can directly screen pathogenic vibrios that can grow in high-salt environment from samples containing complex flora such as seafood and water samples, and is a key tool for identifying halophilic pathogens in aquatic product inspection and food safety monitoring.
