β-Galactosidase (β-GAL) Assay Kit

β-GAL (EC 3.2.1.23) is widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells and is able to catalyze β hydrolysis of galactoside bonds β galactoside compounds, in addition to the effect of transgalactosides. β-GAL can not only release stored energy for rapid plant growth, but also catalyze the hydrolysis of polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and galactose residues at the end of galactolipids during normal polysaccharide metabolism, cell wall component metabolism, and cell wall degradation during aging, and release free galactose.

β-GAL decomposes p-nitrobenzene-β-D-galactoside to produce p-nitrophenol, which has a maximum absorption peak at 400 nm, and the activity of β-GAL is calculated by measuring the absorbance value increase rate.
