β-GD is widely present in animal tissues and is a matrix-degrading enzyme involved in the process of tumor invasion and metastasis, with physiological functions such as hydrolyzing sterols glucuronic acid and acidic mucopolysaccharides. This enzyme is found in high amounts in liver cells. In addition, it is abundant in gastric cancer tissue, and the determination of gastric juice β-GD activity is of great significance for the study of gastric cancer.

β-GD catalyzes the production of free phenolphthalein by phenol β-D-glucuronic acid, and the phenol content is determined to invert the enzyme activity.
