Listeria selective medium foundation (MMA)

Listeria selective medium foundation (MMA), namely Mo-Mai-Plum selective medium, is a solid selective medium for direct isolation of Listeria. It adds a variety of efficient inhibitors, such as glycine anhydride, lithium chloride and nalidixic acid, to the basic nutrients, which can strongly inhibit the growth of non-target bacteria (including gram-positive bacteria and negative bacteria). Listeria can form characteristic colonies on this medium, which are typically black with black halo around them (due to the hydrolysis of aescin). MMA, often combined with enrichment step, is a key selective plate for separating and preliminarily identifying Listeria monocytogenes from mixed samples in food microbiological examination.
