LPM agar
LPM agar, that is, Listeria selective agar base, is a microbial culture medium dedicated to the separation and preliminary identification of Listeria. Its basic components, such as casein trypsin digest and soybean peptone, provide rich nitrogen sources and growth factors to support bacterial growth. Lithium chloride, a key selective inhibitor, and various antibiotics (such as nalidixic acid) can effectively inhibit gram-negative bacteria and most gram-positive bacteria, thus highlighting the growth of Listeria. The typical feature is that Listeria monocytogenes forms fine, blue to blue-gray colonies after incubation on this medium, and black halo rings are produced around the colonies due to the hydrolysis of aescin. This culture medium is an important tool for the detection of Listeria in food and environmental samples.
