NGKG agar is a solid culture medium for selective isolation and identification of Gram-negative bacilli, especially Enterobacteriaceae. "NGKG" comes from its key components: Nalidixic Acid, Kanamycin, Esculin and ferric ammonium citrate. The first two antibiotics can effectively inhibit gram-positive bacteria and most non-target gram-negative bacteria, while the hydrolysis characteristics of aescin can be used to distinguish bacteria. Brown-black halo will be formed around the colony that can hydrolyze aescin. The culture medium is mainly used for screening specific pathogenic bacteria in food and environmental samples.
