C4H, also known as trans-cinnamic acid-4-monooxidase, is mostly found in higher plants, yeasts, and fungi, and this enzyme catalyzes the hydroxylation of cinnamic acid to produce 4-coumarate, which is the second key enzyme in the phenylpropane pathway after L-phenylalanine ammonia lyase.

C4H catalyzes cinnamic acid and NADP to produce 4-coumarate and NADPH, and the NADPH formation rate is determined at 340 nm, which can reflect C4H activity.
