ferric-chelate reductase (FCR) catalyzes the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in high-valent iron chelates, which plays an important role in the absorption of iron in some species.

FCR catalyzes the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, and Fe2+ and ferrozine react to develop color, with characteristic absorbance values at 562nm.
