TTC agar foundation

TTC agar base is a differential medium for microbial counting and colony color development. Its basic components include peptone, beef extract and glucose, and the key additive is 2,3,5- triphenyltetrazole chloride (TTC). Hydrogen atoms produced by microorganisms in the process of growth and metabolism can reduce colorless TTC to insoluble red formazan, thus making colonies appear red or pink, which is in sharp contrast with the culture medium background. This feature greatly facilitates the counting of colonies, especially for the determination of the total number of colonies in milk, dairy products and water, which can effectively prevent the omission of tiny colonies and improve the accuracy and efficiency of counting.
