Iron-containing milk medium
Iron-containing milk medium is a special medium for identifying bacterial protease activity and "violent fermentation" phenomenon, especially for identifying Clostridium. Its main components include fresh skim milk and trace ferrous sulfate. Casein in milk can be decomposed by protease secreted by bacteria to form a clear whey area, which is "casein hydrolysis". However, some Clostridium (such as Clostridium perfringens) can ferment lactose violently to produce acid, which makes casein coagulate, and at the same time, the gas produced breaks the coagulated substance, forming a unique phenomenon of "violent fermentation"; Ferrous sulfate also helps to observe the production of hydrogen sulfide. This reaction is an important basis for identifying Clostridium perfringens.
