Litmus milk medium
Litmus milk medium is a kind of identification medium used to observe the metabolic reactions of various microorganisms, especially for the identification of Clostridium and lactic acid bacteria. Its main components are fresh skim milk and acid-base indicator litmus. The culture medium can present several reactions at the same time: acid production (pink), alkali production (blue), milk coagulation (acid coagulation or chymosin coagulation), peptization (casein is hydrolyzed to make the culture medium clear) and fermentation gas production. The characteristic "violent fermentation" phenomenon of some anaerobic bacteria (such as Clostridium perfringens) (severe gas production leads to the fragmentation of solidified casein) is one of the most remarkable identification indexes of this culture medium, which is widely used in the study of physiological and biochemical characteristics of bacteria.
