Egg yolk agar medium
Egg yolk agar medium is a kind of differential medium used to detect the specific enzyme activity of bacteria, especially suitable for the identification of Clostridium and some Staphylococcus. Its base is nutrient-rich agar, and the key additive is 50% yolk salt suspension. Lecithin and lipoprotein in egg yolk can be used as substrates of corresponding enzymes: opaque milky white precipitation circles (yolk reaction) will be formed around the colonies of lecithinase (α-toxin) positive bacteria (such as Clostridium perfringens); Pearlescent luster appears below the colony of lipase-positive bacteria (such as some staphylococci). This culture medium is an important tool for the classification, identification and pathogenicity evaluation of anaerobic bacteria.
