TSN agar
TSN agar is a special culture medium for selective isolation and identification of pathogenic vibrios such as Vibrio vulnificus. Its name comes from its main components: T (tryptone), S (salt) and N (naphthidonic acid). The high content of sodium chloride (about 2%) creates a hypertonic environment for the growth of Vibrio and can inhibit the growth of most non-Vibrio. The key selective antibiotic nalidixic acid further inhibited gram-negative bacteria. On this culture medium, Vibrio vulnificus usually forms yellow colonies by fermenting sucrose, while Vibrio parahaemolyticus without fermenting sucrose presents blue or green colonies, thus achieving preliminary identification and being widely used for screening pathogenic Vibrio in aquatic products and clinical samples.
