Lactose sulfite medium (LS)
Lactose sulfite medium (LS) is a liquid medium for selective detection and enumeration of Clostridium perfringens. Its basic components include lactose, peptone and yeast extract powder, and the key reagents are sodium sulfite and ammonium ferric citrate. Under anaerobic conditions, Clostridium perfringens can rapidly ferment lactose to produce acid and gas, and reduce sulfite to produce hydrogen sulfide, which reacts with iron ions to form black precipitate. By observing the phenomena of gas production and blackening of culture medium, Clostridium perfringens in samples can be detected and counted in a constructive way, which is widely used in food hygiene inspection.
