EG medium
EG medium is a differential medium for selective separation and identification of Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes in intestinal flora. Its basic components include peptone, yeast extract powder and lactose, and the key identification system uses bromothymol blue and acid magenta as composite indicators. Escherichia coli fermented lactose to produce acid, forming red or pink colonies; Enterobacter aerogenes, on the other hand, are usually orange or white colonies because of their weak acid production and citrate utilization. The culture medium can be preliminarily identified by colony color difference, and it is a common tool for microbial inspection of water quality and food.
