Carboxylesterase (CarE) in mammals, also known as aliesterase, is widely distributed in tissues and organs and belongs to the serine hydrolase family. CarE catalyzes the hydrolysis of endogenous and exogenous substances containing ester bonds, amide bonds, and thioester bonds, but cannot catalyze the hydrolysis of acetylcholine and its analogs.CarE is involved in lipid transport and metabolism, and is associated with the detoxification and metabolism of various drugs, environmental toxicants, and carcinogens. Organophosphorus pesticides can bind to and inhibit CarE activity.CarE can catalyze 1-naphthyl acetate to produce naphthol, which then undergoes a color reaction with Fast Blue (a chromogenic reagent) to form a colored complex. The activity of CarE is calculated by measuring the rate of increase in light absorption at 450 nm.
