Galactose
Galactose
Galactose is a monosaccharide composed of six carbons and one aldehyde, serving as an energy source and a basic component of glycolipids and glycoproteins. It is classified as an aldose and a hexose. Galactose can be obtained from the hydrolysis of lactose under the catalysis of β-galactosidase. Naturally occurring galactose is widely found in organisms, plants, and other natural resins and mucilage. Both D-galactose and L-galactose exist naturally.
