Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)/Fe2⁺ generates hydroxyl free radicals through the Fenton reaction, which oxidizes Fe2⁺ in the o-phenanthroline-Fe2⁺ aqueous solution to Fe3⁺, resulting in a decrease in absorbance at 536 nm. The degree of inhibition of the absorbance decrease rate at 536 nm by the sample reflects the sample's ability to scavenge hydroxyl free radicals.
