Mixed-function oxidases (MFO), also known as multifunctional oxidases, can catalyze degradation reactions—converting the original chemicals into less toxic or non-toxic substances that are excreted from the body. They can also trigger activation reactions, transforming the original chemicals into substances with electrophilic properties. This leads to increased toxicity, turning the chemicals into mutagens or ultimate carcinogens. In recent years, in-depth research on the interaction between the mixed-function oxidase system and exogenous chemicals has great significance for further understanding the toxic effects of exogenous chemicals at the molecular biology level.

MFO catalyzes p-nitroanisole to produce p-nitrophenol, which has a characteristic absorbance at 400 nm.
