Nitrite is widely present in water bodies and soil. It is not only an important intermediate product of organic nitrogen decomposition but may also come from pollution. When the human body ingests an excessive amount of nitrite, it may induce cancer in the digestive system.

Under acidic conditions, nitrite reacts with sulfanilic acid to form a diazonium compound, which then combines with N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine to form a fuchsin azo compound. This compound has a characteristic absorption peak at 540 nm.
