β-1,3-glucanase (β-1,3-GA, EC 3.2.1.39) is mainly present in plants and catalyzes the hydrolysis of β-1,3-glucosidic bonds. When plants are infected by pathogens or exposed to other stress conditions, they can be induced to synthesize a large amount of β-1,3-GA. Therefore, the activity determination of β-1,3-GA is widely used in the research of plant pathology and stress physiology.

β-1,3-GA hydrolyzes laminarin and cleaves internal β-1,3-glucosidic bonds to generate reducing ends. The enzyme activity can be calculated by measuring the production rate of reducing sugars.
