α-galactosidase(α-GAL) Assay Kit

α-Galactosidase (α-GAL, EC 3.2.1.22) is widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells. It specifically catalyzes the hydrolysis of α-galactosidic bonds and is mainly involved in the degradation of galactosides such as raffinose, stachyose, melibiose, and galactomannan. α-GAL is crucial for the germination of plant seeds: in the early stage of seed germination, the D-galactose produced by its catalysis is rapidly converted and consumed through the glycolytic pathway, providing the initial energy source for seed germination; in the later stage, it is mainly involved in the hydrolysis of cell wall storage polysaccharides.

α-GAL decomposes p-nitrophenyl-α-D-galactopyranoside to generate p-nitrophenol, which has a maximum absorption peak at 400 nm. The activity of α-GAL can be calculated by measuring the rate of increase in absorbance.
