Endo-β-1,4-glucanase (Cx, EC 3.2.1.4) is present in bacteria, fungi, and animals, and is one of the components of the cellulase system. Cx mainly acts on amorphous cellulose and water-soluble cellulose derivatives, randomly hydrolyzes glycosidic bonds, and decomposes them into glucose, cellobiose, cellotriose, and other oligomers.

The 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method is used to determine the content of reducing sugars produced by the degradation of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose catalyzed by Cx.
