β-Xylosidase (EC 3.2.1.37) exists in organisms such as plants, bacteria, and fungi. It is a key enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of xylan-type hemicellulose. The product xylose can be used as a carbon source in microbial fermentation. In addition, β-xylosidase can also be used as a biological bleaching agent in the papermaking industry. Compared with traditional bleaching methods, it is more environmentally friendly and has broad application value.

β-Xylosidase catalyzes p-nitrophenyl-β-D-xyloside to produce p-nitrophenol. p-Nitrophenol has a characteristic absorption peak at 405 nm. The activity of β-xylosidase can be calculated by measuring the rate of increase in light absorption at 405 nm.
