Improved Edward agar base
Modified Edward agar base is a solid medium for selective separation of streptococcus agalactiae, especially suitable for screening group B streptococcus in pregnant women. Its basic components include peptone and meat paste, and the key selective additives are polymyxin and nalidixic acid, which can effectively inhibit gram-negative bacteria and most gram-positive miscellaneous bacteria. The added sheep blood and horse serum can provide essential growth factors and enhance the visibility of hemolysis reaction. Streptococcus agalactiae forms gray-white microcolonies with narrow β -hemolytic ring on this medium, which realizes efficient separation and is an important tool for perinatal clinical examination.
