CATC agar
CATC agar is a solid medium for selective isolation and identification of Clostridium difficile. Its basic components are peptone and yeast extract powder, and the key selective additives are cycloserine and cefoxitin, which can effectively inhibit the growth of most non-target bacteria. The culture medium contains fructose as fermentable sugar and bromothymol blue as acid-base indicator. Clostridium difficile ferments fructose to produce acid, which makes the culture medium around the colony yellow and the colony is characteristic black. The agar was identified by typical black colonies, and it was widely used in the detection of Clostridium difficile in clinical and environmental samples.
