AtSWEET4 is a gene encoding a stably hydrophilic sugar transporter with seven transmembrane domains in Arabidopsis. The protein by this gene belongs to the "SWEET family," which is generally responsible for the transport of sugars in plants and plays a role in plant response to biotic stresses such pathogen infection. In AtSWEET4, a hexose facilitator, mediates sugar transport to axial sinks and affects plant development. It has been reported in the literature heterologous expression of AtAMT1;1 can complement the hexose-deficient EBY.VW4000 yeast mutant.
