LBS agar is a solid medium for selective separation and enumeration of lactobacillus, and its name comes from inventors De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe. The culture medium contains peptone, beef extract powder and yeast extract powder to provide nitrogen source and growth factor; The key additives are sodium acetate, ammonium citrate and Tween 80, which can form an acidic buffer system and promote the growth of Lactobacillus. Glucose is the main carbon source and bromocresol green is the acid-base indicator. Acid production by lactobacillus fermentation makes the surrounding of the colony yellow. This culture medium is widely used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of lactobacillus in food and intestinal samples.
