Acidified MRS agar (AMRSA)
Acidified MRS agar (AMRSA) is a low pH solid medium for selective separation of Lactobacillus. It adjusts the pH to 5.4 on the basis of standard MRS formula, and inhibits the growth of most non-target bacteria by using acidic environment. The medium contains peptone, beef extract powder and yeast extract powder to provide basic nutrition; Tween 80, sodium acetate and ammonium citrate maintain the selection system. Lactobacillus can still grow and ferment glucose to produce acid under this acidic condition, which makes the indicator around the colony yellow. This culture medium is widely used for the separation and identification of acid-resistant lactic acid bacteria in fermented food and oral samples.
