The protein encoded by AtVTL1 gene belongs to the vacuolar iron transporter-like protein. They are mainly involved in the compartmentalization iron in plant cells, that is, responsible for transporting iron ions into vacuoles for storage, or transporting them out of vacuoles when plants need them, which is essential maintaining iron homeostasis in plants. In the literature Vacuolar-Iron-Transporter1-Like Proteins Mediate Iron Homeostasis in Arabidopsis it was reported that AtVTL1 heterologously expressed can complement the iron-sensitive △ccc1 yeast mutant.
