BC agar is a solid medium for selective separation and enumeration of Bacillus cereus in food. Its basic components are peptone and beef extract powder, and the key selective additive is polymyxin B, which can effectively inhibit gram-negative bacteria and some non-target gram-positive bacteria. Mannitol and phenol red in the culture medium constitute the identification system: Bacillus cereus does not ferment mannitol, the colony is red and the surrounding culture medium does not change color; The miscellaneous bacteria that ferment mannitol will produce acid and turn yellow. Typical colonies are often accompanied by milky halo produced by lecithin enzyme activity. This culture medium is widely used for rapid detection of Bacillus cereus in food hygiene inspection.
