BL agar medium is a solid medium for selective separation and enumeration of Bifidobacterium. Its basic components are peptone, beef extract powder and yeast extract powder, which provide nitrogen source and growth factor; The key selective additives are mupirocin and cysteine hydrochloride. The former inhibits most Gram-positive bacteria, while the latter reduces the redox potential. This culture medium can support Bifidobacterium to form round, convex, creamy white colonies with neat edges, and is widely used for the separation and quantitative analysis of Bifidobacterium in probiotic products and intestinal microbial samples.
