Sulfite agar
Sulfite agar is a solid medium for selective separation of Clostridium, especially Clostridium perfringens. Its basic components provide basic nutrition for peptone and yeast extract powder, and the key components sodium sulfite and ammonium ferric citrate form a color development system. Under anaerobic conditions, Clostridium perfringens reduced sulfite to produce hydrogen sulfide, which reacted with iron ions to form insoluble black iron sulfide precipitate, making the colony appear characteristic black. The culture medium is widely used for rapid detection and counting of Clostridium perfringens in food, water quality and environmental samples.
