Sucrose tryptone agar of skimmed milk powder is a selective medium for isolation and identification of Vibrio cholerae. Its basic components are tryptone, sucrose and skim milk powder, which provide nitrogen source, carbon source and factors to promote the growth of Vibrio. High concentration sodium chloride creates an alkaline hypertonic environment. Vibrio cholerae ferments sucrose to produce acid, which makes the colony yellow, while other vibrios are mostly blue-green. Combined with the transparent hydrolysis circle formed by skim milk powder, it is an effective tool for detecting Vibrio cholerae in water and food samples.
