RS medium

RS medium is a solid medium for selective separation and counting of lactic acid bacteria. Its basic components are peptone, yeast extract powder and glucose, which provide nitrogen source, vitamins and carbon source; The key additives are sodium acetate and manganese sulfate. The former maintains acidic environment to inhibit miscellaneous bacteria, while the latter promotes the growth of lactic acid bacteria. Bromocresol purple in the culture medium is used as an acid-base indicator, and lactic acid bacteria ferment to produce acid, which turns the surrounding colony yellow. This culture medium is widely used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of lactic acid bacteria in dairy products, fermented foods and probiotic products.
