MS Base Salts(-P-Ca)
The MS medium was developed by Murashige and Skoog in 1962 for tobacco cell culture and is commonly referred to as MS Medium. The solid MS medium (containing agar) is used for callus induction, as well as for the culture of embryos, stem segments, shoot tips, and anthers. The liquid MS medium is primarily employed for cell suspension culture. The MS medium formulations are characterized by low phosphorus and calcium levels—or even complete absence of these elements—while retaining the essential macronutrients and micronutrients required for plant growth. Available in dry powder form, it facilitates storage and transportation. Upon use, it can be rapidly prepared into a nutrient solution with appropriate pH, making it ideal for research on phosphorus and calcium deficiency in plants. This medium enables plants to exhibit physiological responses to phosphorus and calcium deficiency, providing standardized cultivation conditions for relevant scientific studies.
