EBY.VW4000 is an engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain, which is characterized by the deletion of about 21 hexose transporter genes. This genetic modification makes it impossible for the strain to use common hexoses such as glucose, fructose, mannose and galactose as carbon sources, or even transport xylose. Therefore, EBY.VW4000 cannot grow on the medium containing these sugars, and it must rely on other carbon sources (such as maltose or glycerol) to survive.
