Modified sulfite agar
Modified sulfite agar is a solid medium for selective separation of Clostridium perfringens. Its basic components are peptone and yeast extract powder, and the key components are sodium sulfite and ammonium ferric citrate to form a color system. The improved formula can enhance selectivity by adjusting pH and nutrients. Under anaerobic conditions, Clostridium perfringens reduced sulfite to produce hydrogen sulfide, which reacted with iron ions to form black precipitate, making the colony characteristic black. The culture medium is widely used for rapid detection and counting of Clostridium perfringens in food and water samples.
