△TPS1
△TPS1
TPS1, short for “trehalose-6-phosphate synthase 1,” encodes the protein that is the enzyme cataly the first key step in the first rate-limiting step of trehalose biosynthesis. When yeast cells are suddenly exposed to high concentrations of glucose, glucose rapidly flows into glycolytic pathway. In the absence of TPS1, this rapid influx causes the accumulation of intermediate metabolites, especially 6-phosphofructose, whichpletes ATP and inorganic phosphate from the cell, leading to cell death. The Δtps1 yeast mutant is unable to grow on fast fermentable carbon sources as glucose or fructose but can grow normally on nonfermentable carbon sources such as glycerol or ethanol.
