nissle 1917
Escherichia coli strain Nissle 1917 is a non-pathogenic symbiotic Escherichia coli isolate. In 1917, a strain of Escherichia coli was isolated from the intestine of a soldier who was not infected with dysentery by German microbiologist Alfred Nissle. This strain can be used as a medicine to treat other infected people, and was later named Nissle 1917, which is usually abbreviated as EcN. EcN is an unmodified wild-type Escherichia coli strain, which does not produce any enterotoxin or cytotoxin (enterotoxin is a toxin produced by some microorganisms and can cause gastrointestinal symptoms).
