Sodium sulfite agar is a solid medium for selective separation of Clostridium sulfite reduction. Its basic components provide basic nutrition for peptone and yeast extract powder, and the key components sodium sulfite and ammonium ferric citrate form a color development system. Under anaerobic conditions, Clostridium sulfite can reduce sulfite to sulfide, which reacts with iron ions to form insoluble black iron sulfide precipitate, resulting in black colonies. This culture medium is widely used in the detection and counting of Clostridium sulfite-reducing in water quality and food samples.
